In June, PointFive launched out of stealth after a year and a half of hard work. Our goal was to create a product that would empower engineers to embrace cloud cost efficiency, promoting innovation and growth through both engineering and FinOps teams.
But how did we come up with that idea? In many ways, the idea for PointFive feels like a coincidence.
It all started when Gal Ben David, Amir Hozez, and I transitioned our cloud operations from our previous cybersecurity company, IntSights, to Rapid7. In doing so, we noticed critical cloud cost inefficiencies—but we didn’t have the tools to address the issue effectively.
Combining our personal experiences, we realized that we could create a cloud efficiency tool together to help teams solve this problem.
Transitioning from the cybersecurity industry to FinOps gave us a huge advantage. Not only were we able to bring a fresh perspective to the table, but we were able to provide unique solutions for FinOps practitioners by applying some cybersecurity principles to our solutions.
This includes our 5x Research Team—a team dedicated to mapping out cloud cost inefficiencies in the customer’s environment, ultimately supporting financial optimization. The idea stemmed from cybersecurity solutions that outline different threats or vulnerabilities to help customers prepare for cyber attacks. Together with our DeepWaste™ detection technology, which provides actionable insights and real-time visibility into cloud inefficiencies, our solution is able to go deeper than anything else on the market.
With the FinOps industry on the verge of a paradigm shift, it’s an honor for our company to provide new ideas for these pivotal moments.
During the development process, we knew we wanted our company to revolve around efficiency. We wanted to help customers save 50% — or point five — of their cloud costs, with half the effort in half the time. We wanted our name and goal to align so we and our customers could be reminded of our purpose every time our name is seen or heard.
As founders, we love that we’ve been able to pull together such a committed and professional team that still knows how to have fun. We’ve enjoyed our journey into the engineering and FinOps world so far, and we’re off to a fantastic start. But we can’t wait to keep learning and growing with the industry, and show the world all we have to offer.
